 Worship and Art

October 19-23, 2010

This five-day cluster of workshops is designed for pastors, worship leaders, liturgical artists, and church educators desiring to engage the arts in planning/designing worship services and other community gatherings.  Each workshop is taught experientially with active participation, guided learning, and lively conversation/discussion.  You may register for all or for part of the five-day cluster listed below.  Discounted registration for the full five days:  $550 (includes meals designated in each day’s description.)

You may register any of these workshops individually, or participate in all of them as part of

 “Worship and Art”.

Foundational Issues and Concepts/ Worship as Art (day one and two of Worship   and Art cluster)

In this workshop the language of the arts will guide reflections about worship.  Participants will practice designing worship experiences for their congregations that engage techniques arising out of arts traditions and that are consistent with contemporary communication patterns: multi-sensory, narrative, visual and participatory.  Current shifts in Protestant worship renewal will give form to these two-day sessions.   First day: 10am-9pm.  Second day: 8:30am-4:30pm.  $225 includes lunch both days, dinner the first day, and breakfast the second day.

Worship Spaces as Art Spaces (and vice versa) (day three of Worship and Art      cluster)

During this workshop participants will focus upon church buildings as places that help define the way we live and work together, and that impact our interaction, emotional health, and the tasks we do.  During this day-long workshop we will explore varieties of churches and other buildings to observe how spaces are built, renewed and re-formed to make spaces that welcome, inspire, and create communities.  Participants should anticipate spending most of the day out of the classroom and in public places.  8:30am-5pm. $125 includes lunch at a restaurant.

Creating Visual Art (day four of Worship and Art cluster)

During this day in the In Stitches fabric art studio, participants will explore the elements of liturgical design while creating with fabric or other art medium of their choice.  While most participants will not finish the project they begin, this is an opportunity to reflect, discuss, gain skills, and envision new possibilities for engaging the visual arts in worship.  Many of the concepts, ideas, and conversations from the first three days of “Worship and Art” often come together in creative tangible expression during this day in the studio.  9am-5pm.  $125 includes lunch.

Transition Day (day five of Worship and Art cluster)

This day is individualized to allow participants to do whatever they need to do to make this week most useful when they go back home. They may spend the day writing, or working in the fabric art studio, reading in the theology and art library, or talking through ideas that have arisen during the week.  This day is pure resourced/guided creative time.  8am-4pm.  $125 includes breakfast
